Joe Brand, from member firm Patton Boggs (Washington, USA) and former Chairman of Legalink has a long business relationship with Legalink members. Though he has received work from Legalink members, including years ago one very large case from Per Dalskov, also former Chairman and a lawyer at Legalink´s member firm in Denmark, he has mostly referred work to them. For Joe Brand, this is "a wonderful convenience for (his) clients and therefore (he´s) delighted to do it". Together with Doug Mishkin, currently on Legalink Committee and also a lawyer at Patton Boggs, Joe Brand says he is now at work building cordial and commercial relationships with Legalink members one at a time. "All this is good", he says, "but the friendship part is even better". Here is one recent example he had to illustrate Legalink´s ethos of "business through friendship" at work. Or, in this case, just plain friendship through friendship.
Joe Brand chairs a non-governmental organization (NGO) called the "Center for Justice and Accountability". This NGO brings civil actions in American courts for foreign victims of torture against their perpetrators. Attorneys at the "Center for Justice and Accountability" recently became interested in universal jurisdiction cases in Spain and asked Joe Brand if he could help them find a good law firm. "I referred them to Pedro Moreira dos Santos and the very next day my people came back to me, saying not only had Pedro helped them, pro bono, but he had given them spot-on advice and offered to assist them going forward in any way they wished." And this, for Joe Brand in Whasington, USA, and for any one on any given point of the globe where Legalink members have their friends, "was an act of friendship". |
